About True Country Size
True Country Size is a map tool for comparing real-world outlines across different parts of the globe. Select a country, state, territory, or region, then drag its outline over another location to compare shape and scale.
The app uses public geographic datasets and a Mercator map view, which means the background map visually stretches areas near the poles. The draggable outline helps make that distortion easier to inspect.
What you can compare
- Countries and territories.
- Major administrative regions such as states, provinces, and territories.
- Multiple selected outlines with separate colors.
Why true country size matters
Flat world maps can make northern and southern places look much larger than they are relative to locations near the equator. Comparing movable outlines makes it easier to judge land area, shape, latitude, and map projection distortion at the same time.
Common comparisons
People often use True Country Size to compare places such as Alaska and the contiguous United States, Greenland and Africa, Brazil and Europe, or Texas and countries around the world.
